They had historically been in the service of the czars and had strong musical and military leanings. This allowed him a steady income with time on the side to compose because a more traditional path would have been to continue studying as an organist at a German conservatory. As he grew old Liszt frequently would perform Chopin’s works and never passed up an opportunity to praise his former friend’s genius.
