The Flamingo Las Vegas is a hotel & casino located right on the Las Vegas strip, and is the premier in Las Vegas entertainment and hotels. The property offers 3,626 hotel rooms, and the architectural theme is reminiscent of the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne style of Miami and South Beach. The central outdoor area also houses an exhibit of flamingos as part of a wildlife habitat. It was the third resort to open on the Strip, and the oldest resort on the Strip still in operation today.
The Flamingo also has a history fit for the books, and has a fairly solid reputation as the “beginning” of modern-day Las Vegas. The notorious gangster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel first opened the hotel in 1947 with backing from several mob associates, and he named the resort after his girlfriend Virginia Hill, who loved to gamble and whose nickname was Flamingo—a nickname Siegel gave her due to her long, skinny legs. The hotel also has Hollywood legend as well, as the original Ocean’s Eleven was filmed here in 1960, as was Viva Las Vegas in 1964.
The hotel’s gardens behind the towers feature flamingos and ducks, and there’s tennis courts, swimming pools and a health spa as well. The Flamingo also has several running shows, including Nathan Burton‘s magic and the musical numbers of Donny and Marie. For food, you can choose from Steakhouse46 (dedicated to the hotel’s opening in 1946), as well as Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, or you can hit Sin City Brewing Company for a beer or two.
