Common first hit the ground running, with his debut LP all the way back in 1992 with his killer album Can I Borrow a Dollar? His first major-label album, Like Water for Chocolate, received widespread critical acclaim and tremendous commercial success, and then he went on to win his first Grammy award in 2003 for “Best R&B Song” for “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)” with Erykah Badu.

Common was awarded his second Grammy for “Best Rap Performance” by a Duo or Group, for “Southside” (featuring Kanye West), from his July 2007 album Finding Forever. His best-of album, Thisisme Then: The Best of Common, was released on November 27, 2007.

Common has also initiated a sizable acting career, working the Hollywood circuit in style, starring in films such as Smokin’ Aces, Street Kings, American Gangster, Wanted, Terminator Salvation, Date Night, Just Wright, Happy Feet Two, and New Year’s Eve. How to Gamble in Vegas – without losing your mind!

So you want to know how to gamble in Vegas? Want to know some Vegas gambling secrets? You’ve come to the right place! But before we get started on sharing some gambling tips before your trip to Las Vegas, it’s important to ask yourself some very, very important questions:

Why am I really gambling?

Upon walking into a Las Vegas casino, maybe you hear the bells & whistles of the slot machines calling your name, maybe you hear the roar of a crowd over an exciting game of craps? So you think to yourself (or if you’re traveling with a group of friends), you (or someone you’re with) says “Hey! This sounds like fun, I want to give this gambling game a try!” So you do! What you do next, and the next steps you take, will determine your gambling destiny. You may win, you may lose, and you may lose so bad that you end up waking up the next day with a screeching hangover and no money left in your pocket! (Sound familiar?) I speak from direct experience! So take it from me as I’ve learned what to do and what NOT to do in a Las Vegas Casino. So you have to ask yourself this key gambling question: why am I really gambling in Las Vegas? Here’s some common reasons people gamble when they come to Las Vegas:

Gambling as Entertainment
“Hey – I’m here to have fun, what the hell? I’m in Vegas for the weekend, might as well throw $100, $200, (or $2,000) on Black on the roulette table!”

Gambling as part of a group
“I’m here in the casino, and I’m here with a group of friends all of whom want to gamble! So why not?”

Gambling with Delusion
“Wait a second! You heard that someone won $20,000 in a single weekend in Las Vegas? Maybe that next person can be me so I’m going to give it a shot and gamble every dollar I have!”

Gambling with False Expectations
“Well damn, I lost $500 last night, and I have to pay rent in a couple of weeks! Maybe I’ll throw down some more with my credit card cash advance and maybe I can make it back?”

Gamble for fun and entertainment purposes only!

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to notice that gambling with delusion and/or false expectations are BOTH dangerous and are THE worst reasons to gamble! Gamble for fun and entertainment purposes only, and for no other reason! The odds are ALWAYS stacked in the house’ favor. Remember – this is a business these hotels are running, and you are no more then a customer! So it’s important to remember this golden rule about gambling in Las Vegas. You’re there to be entertained! So let the amazing town of Las Vegas entertain you and have fun and be entertained! Nothing more, nothing less!

Another important golden rule of gambling, is (to paraphrase Kenny Rogers) – “knowing when to walk away, or knowing when to run.” Ever notice that there’s endless mirrors on every wall in casinos? You don’t see a single clock anywhere telling you what time it is? That’s because TIME is not on your side, which brings us to our next important gambling bulletpoint…

Vegas casinos are a science, stupid!

Every gambler knows that time is an abstract, especially when you’re in a Las Vegas casino. Vegas casinos are designed as sprawling large venues & rooms with mirrors, twisting & turning aisles, and you often can’t find your way THROUGH the place. You might think to yourself: “Damn where am I going?” Guess what? That’s what they’re designed to do! They’re DESIGNED to keep you on the casino floor searching or wandering around for as long as humanly possible! Think about it this way – if you were an architect, and you were to design a casino, and the goal is to make money off people gambling, then you’re not going to have clocks everywhere and an easy route to get from A to B! These venues are designed to keep you dazzled, in a daze, and wandering around for hours on end and trying out different casino games. That’s why it’s important to hatch a plan before you head out for the evening whether you’re by yourself or heading out with a group of friends. When you’re with a group of friends, who wants to pack up and leave the casino after 10-15 minutes if you (or someone you’re with) has lost a “too much money”? Nobody! That’s why the “house always wins”, and it brings us to the important concept of gambling time.

The Importance of Time in a Vegas Casino

Time is never in your favor when you’re gambling, and that’s why it’s imperative you spread your budget out over the length of time you’re going to be in the casino. As a random example, if you have $200 to gamble in one night, think of how many ways you can spread this out?

$200 budget for gambling

1 hour of gambling = $50 per every 15 minutes is your gambling limit – then you LEAVE after 1 hour!
2 hours of gambling time = $25 per every 15 minutes is your gambling limit – then you LEAVE after 2 hours!

Whether you’re on a casino floor for 15 minutes or for 4+ hours, it’s up to you to control your budget and spread it out, or restrict your cash-spending depending on how much time you’re spending on the casino floor. Budgeting money comes down to self-discipline, and without that self-discipline in-tact? You will surely get burned. Unfortunately, it’s very challenging to remember these important time-equals-money concepts if you’ve already been served two rum and cokes from a waitress and you’re feeling giddy at the roulette wheel. That’s why hatching a plan prior is not only important, it’s a must! Just remember this important factor, you’re there to have fun and be entertained, but don’t over-do it!

The Win Factor

A golden rule for gambling is to know your “Win Factor”. If you WIN money, guess what? You then have to make the decision so many people fail to subscribe to. “Do I leave the casino floor, or do I keep on gambling?”
Again – self-discipline is key with the Win Factor. If you’re with a group of 20 people and you’ve won? Hang out for a while and let your friends indulge themselves. There’s no rule saying you must gamble your winnings! So don’t! If you do choose to stay and gamble, then stick to the original rules we’re outlining here!

Alcohol

People under-estimate the role booze can play in gambling. Remember, one drink per hour on the casino floor is plenty! For some people, it’s enough to knock them over. Drinking excessively can unfortunately hinder your above rationale when you’re trying to establish an element of control or wisdom when you’re gambling. That’s why its important to establish a plan prior regarding your personal budget and the TIME you will spend gambling.

Budget

How much money am I willing to gamble? The real de-facto definition of gambling is “betting money with the willingness to lose it”. You have to set a certain amount of money, so that if that money leaves your wallet (or purse), you’re not screwed and/or “up the creek without a paddle” per-se. Budgeting money to gamble also boils down to common sense. If you have $800 spending money for the 2 days you’re spending in Las Vegas, then don’t go betting $700 on a single game in the casino the minute you walk in. Set a budget beforehand! Frankly if you don’t set a budget when gambling, you’re very foolish! Remember this golden rule about Vegas:

Las Vegas is a rewarding town for entertainment, but it will never forgive a gambler’s own stupidity and/or false expectations.

If you’ve been to Las Vegas before, maybe you’ve seen those random people downtown wandering in and out of fountains, or hitting up strangers for money in Vegas? There’s a reason they’re in that situation! If you gamble without setting a budget, and you run the risk of really doing yourself more harm then good in the long run.

Ah – you know what? I don’t need to gamble!

Guess what? There’s many people that visit Las Vegas every year for business, or simple entertainment and want to eat out at great Vegas restaurants and want to see the Vegas shows – and they don’t spend a DIME gambling! Why? It can boil down to basic reasoning:

“I don’t have the money to gamble, so why bother?”
“I’m here attending a tradeshow, and I don’t have the time!”

Those are both logical reasons not to gamble, and guess what? Some of the best cuisine in the United States is in right in Las Vegas. You’re free to spend good money eating like a king in Las Vegas, and why not let some of those other suckers get fooled into playing the roulette wheel or slot machines all night?

Hatch your gambling plan!

If you remember these key-concepts when you gamble in Las Vegas, you will be better off then many other people standing right beside you at the slots or at the blackjack tables:

Gambling Plan:

1. Determine WHY you are gambling, and answer this question honestly and truthfully to yourself!

If you decide to gamble, these are your next steps:

1. Set your budget
2. Set your time limit!
3. Beware of Alcohol and know your limits!

Now go have fun in Las Vegas!

Okay, so you want to know how to be on Jersey Shore right? RIGHT? Well, good news, you came to the right place. The man, the myth, and the one and only DJ Pauly D is going to be at Liquid in Las Vegas this Saturday April 13th!. The man is not only a sick DJ but he’s also a super-cool guy from everyone we’ve spoken to. Zero ego and very down-to-earth. Do you know what this means? In addition to getting your drink-on and getting down to the guy’s crazy/insane beats, maybe you can talk to Pauly D in the flesh and see if he has any recommendations for getting on Jersey Shore? We both know Jersey Shore isn’t the easiest gig in the world to get. Here’s what they recommend if you’re looking to get “chosen”:

“Killer shades, awesome hair, bandanas, and bling can mean only one thing.” So if you’re tanned and a toned fist-pumper, and you love the shore, we want to hear from you!”

Okay – so if you own sunglasses, bandanas (this rounds it down to well, over 4 billion people), but if you have bling, and you’re tanned and a toned fist pumper. (That last part can be translated as: if you’re pale, goth, or haven’t been to the gym in a while, aka a lazy dude or chick, or don’t have any good looking jewelry or “bling” on your person, don’t apply or even think about it.) That’s the translation for you!

Also, it’s hard not to love this line:

“Do you dominate the gym, tear up the dance floor and rule the bedroom?”

Whoa – hold on a second, “rule the bedroom”? You mean rule the bedroom as in you tell your little brother “hey buddy, not tonight – don’t throw your sleeping bag in my corner!” Hells no! They mean rip it up with an amazing sex life and then in your free time, you’re out clubbing & tearing it up like Danny from Saturday Night Fever.

I took an advance walking tour of the sprawling day and nightclub resort with Jonathan Segal, CEO of The One Group, who acquired the property from the Tropicana across from MGM Grand in March.
“Our goal is to have all the elements in place for a spectacular summer season grand gala opening,” Jonathan told me. “We are thrilled to build off the momentum and success of our opening of STK [at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas] and now will create quite the splash in the day and nightclub scene, too.”
